Reviving the rural honesty box for a cashless Britain from a workshop in Cardigan, West Wales.

Honesty Box makes it easy for farm gates, produce stalls, allotments and charity collection points to take card payments without staff, tills or screens — using a laser-etched slate plaque and a QR code. If you're working on a story about rural commerce, the cash economy, or Welsh tech, the materials below are yours to use.

Honesty Box is a contactless card payment platform for unattended retail — farm gates, roadside produce stalls, allotment shops, and anywhere the traditional honesty box still operates. Founded in 2025 and based in Cardigan, West Wales, the platform pairs a laser-etched slate plaque with QR-code Stripe payments, helping small producers keep selling as cash disappears from rural Britain.

Our story

The honesty box is one of rural Britain's quietest institutions: a tin, a tray of eggs, a hand-painted price list, and a trust that's older than the road it sits on. It's also disappearing.

As cash use falls and rural ATMs close, smallholders, market gardeners and roadside producers are losing informal income, not because demand is gone, but because the coins aren't. Honesty Box was built to fix that without losing the spirit of the thing. A laser-etched slate plaque sits where the tin used to. A buyer scans, pays in seconds via Stripe, and walks away with their eggs. No app, no till, no staff.

Founded in 2025 by Aaron Grieve and Eddie Mathews, two web and app developers living near Cardigan, Ceredigion, HonestyBox is part of a wider belief that the right technology should help rural and traditional economies survive — not replace them.

Story angles

For journalists looking for a hook, here are three directions this story can run in:

The death of cash and the future of rural trade.

ATM closures, declining cash use, and the slow disappearance of informal rural commerce. HonestyBox is a small, tangible answer to a national problem.

Welsh slate, Welsh tech, Welsh trust.

A Cardigan-based founder using laser-etched slate to keep a centuries-old rural tradition alive. A "made in Wales" story with a modern edge.

Trust economies in a digital age.

The honesty box has always been a quiet expression of community trust. What happens when you digitise that without breaking it?
