The problem

Nine out of ten payments in Britain aren't cash

Your cake shed is charming, well-stocked and open all hours. And it only accepts the one thing almost nobody has in their pocket.

Cash made up just 9% of all UK payments in 2024 — down from 23% in 2019 and 48% a decade ago. Around 17 million UK adults now use cash once a month or less. Among 16–24 year olds, four in ten rarely touch it at all.

So here's what actually happens at your shed:
Someone pulls over. They pick up a brownie. They pat their pockets. Nothing. They rummage in the car door for coins. Nothing. They put the brownie back and drive off.

Most cake shed owners never find out how many customers walked away. There's no record of the sale that didn't happen.

Why it suits cake sheds

Built for a shed at the end of a driveway, park, village green...

Nothing to steal there's no cash tin to prise off the wall and no card terminal to walk off with. If someone smashes the plaque, we'll send you a new one. Your takings were never in the shed to begin with.

No power, no wifi, no signal needed at the shed

The customer's phone does all the work. Your shed just needs a printed square of plastic on the wall.

It works while you're asleep

Sunday evening, half seven, someone's driving back from the coast and spots your sign. You're in the bath. They still pay.

You finally know what's selling

Which cakes go first. What day is busiest. Whether the flapjack is worth the effort. Every sale is timestamped, so you can bake to demand instead of guessing.

Questions

Everything you need to know about taking card payments at your stall

Do I need wifi or electricity in my cake shed?

No. The QR plaque is printed — it needs nothing at all. Your customer's phone connects using their own mobile data or the payment happens through their banking app.

What if a customer doesn't have a smartphone?

Keep a cash tin alongside the plaque. Most sheds run both. The QR code is there to catch the people you're currently losing, not to replace the ones already paying.

Do people actually pay when nobody's watching?

Broadly, yes — that's why honesty boxes have worked in this country for generations. Removing the "I had no change" excuse tends to increase the proportion of people who pay, because most non-payment isn't dishonesty, it's a lack of coins.

How quickly do I get my money?

Payments are processed by Stripe and settle to your bank account on a weekly rolling basis. You can see every transaction as it happens.

Can I change my prices?

Yes, from your phone, any time. The plaque stays the same — it just points to your shed.
