Egg Boxes

The egg honesty box that takes card payments

Your hens don't take days off, and most drivers don't carry change. A QR code on the box lets people pay by card from the car window, straight to your bank account.

Set up in under 10 minutes. First sale often the same day.

The problem

The eggs are there. The change isn't.

The box goes out full at eight, and by teatime there's an IOU on a receipt and a couple of coins that don't quite add up. Nobody's being unkind — hardly anyone carries cash any more. People pull over, pat their pockets, and put the eggs back.

How it works

Set your prices. They scan. The hens get the credit.

Set up your egg box in minutes. No app to download, no card reader, nothing to plug in.

Set your prices

£2.50 a half-dozen, £4.50 a dozen, a bit more for the duck eggs. Whatever your setup, it takes about two minutes.

Fix the QR code to your box

Screw the engraved slate plaque to the lid or the gatepost, or print and laminate the code. Same code all year round.

Get paid

People scan with their phone camera, tap the box they're taking, and pay from the car window. A notification for every sale tells you when to send fresh cartons down.

Built for how egg boxes actually work

The box isn't staffed, half your customers pay without leaving the car, and the stock walks out of the hen house every morning. HonestyBox fits right in.

This is some text inside of a div block.

A notification for every sale means you know the box is running low without trudging down the lane. Six sales by lunchtime means it's time to send fresh cartons down.

Questions

Everything you need to know about taking card payments at your stall

Do I need to register to sell eggs at my gate?

If you're selling your own ungraded eggs straight to the person eating them, you generally don't need to grade or stamp them. Rules on cleanliness and best-before information still apply, and larger flocks have registration requirements, so it's worth a quick check of the current DEFRA guidance for your flock size.

Do I have to pay tax on my egg money?

HMRC's trading allowance means the first £1,000 of trading income in a tax year is generally tax-free with nothing to declare. If your egg box does better than that, check HMRC's guidance on registering as self-employed.

What if the signal at my gate is patchy?

People need enough signal to load a payment page, which most roadside spots manage. If yours is a genuine notspot, keep the tin front and centre and let the code catch the rest.

Can people still pay cash?

Absolutely. Most egg boxes run the tin and the plaque side by side. The code is for the people who haven't carried coins in years.

Do buyers need to download an app?

No. They scan the code with their phone camera and pay in their browser. Ten seconds, eggs in the passenger footwell, everyone's happy.
